Serengeti National Park in Tanzania

The Serengeti National Park is located in East Africa, including the countries of Kenya and Tanzania. This large National Park is famous for the annual migration of wildebeest, which in many National Geographic documentaries you have probably seen on TV.

In 1913, Stewart Edward White, an American hunter, wrote «we were walking miles and miles of parched earth … then I saw some green trees next to a river, walked two miles more and found myself in paradise.» I had just found the Serengeti, grazing land of the Masai for millennia. For them, the Siringitu is the «land that runs forever.»

The Serengeti region of 30,000 km2 including the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Maswa Game Reserve, the Loliondo Controlled Areas, Grumeti and Ikorongo and Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Its unique ecosystems with climatic and biological conditions that have persisted for a million years, have inspired writers, filmmakers, photographers and scientists and, currently, more than 90,000 tourists visit the area each year.

The Serengeti National Park extends over 14,763 km2, forming the largest nature reserve in the country with different landscapes, vast meadows, rock formations, acacia forests, etc… where live millions of ungulates, wildebeest and zebras common, in search of grass, chased by predators such as lions and leopards. Without doubt, the most impressive of the park are the great migrations of wildebeest, crossing the Mara River despite harassment of crocodiles.

The Serengeti is a unique ecosystem and one of the oldest on Earth. Its special climate, vegetation and fauna have barely changed in a few million years, and possibly where the human species appeared two million years ago, in Olduvai Gorge. The law of life is the boss in the Serengeti, life, death, adaptation and migration are as old as the hills.

The endless plains of the Serengeti are within 330 km northwest of Arusha.

The Serengeti is the oldest park and largest trip to Tanzania can be visited throughout the year in both the wet and the dry season, during the rainy season from November to May is when there is the annual migration of wildebeest and of zebras.

During the dry months of June to September the wildebeest and zebra gather in the short grassy plains in the south of the park.
